Avenues for Change Counselor David Miller Earns Clinical Licensure
GREAT BEND, Kan. — After more than 20 years working with college students before pursuing a career in mental health, David Miller has reached a significant professional milestone, earning his designation as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC).
Miller, a counselor with Avenues for Change, recently passed his clinical licensure examination, completing the requirements to become an LCPC.

As a telehealth-only provider, Miller works with clients virtually, allowing individuals to access counseling and assessment services from the comfort and privacy of their own homes. He works with adolescents and adults, as well as couples and families, and has a particular interest in supporting men, college-aged adults and individuals navigating substance use, trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression and relationship concerns.
Miller also provides ADHD, ADD and autism assessments through telehealth and assists individuals navigating the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) process.
His path to counseling followed more than two decades of working with college students. During that time, Miller recognized that he wanted additional education and clinical experience to better support people facing significant mental health challenges.
“After working 20-plus years with college students, I realized I was woefully inadequate in helping people struggling with major mental health challenges,” Miller said. “Clinical education and experience help me better serve those in need.”
Miller holds a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and a Master of Arts in Higher Education. His additional training includes Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS), Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM), Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM), Addiction Severity Index (ASI) and military service-related behavioral health challenges. He is also an SSDI/SSI advocate.
Miller describes his counseling style as supportive, encouraging and direct. His work incorporates approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing, with an emphasis on getting to know each client as an individual and identifying practical ways to move forward.
For those who have worked alongside Miller during the licensure process, the milestone represents more than passing an examination.
“We are incredibly proud of David and all he has accomplished,” said Kelly Johnson, owner of Avenues for Change. “It has been an honor to provide his clinical supervision and watch him grow into a compassionate and thoughtful provider. Throughout the process, David has been willing to explore both personal and professional perspectives, accept challenges, and use those experiences to develop a strong identity as a clinician. This accomplishment is very well deserved, and we are excited to see him continue to grow in this next chapter of his career.”
Miller said his first priority with a new client is creating the opportunity to understand the person behind the reason for seeking counseling.
“A large part of our first appointment will be spent just getting to know you better on a personal level,” Miller said. “What are your likes and dislikes? Who supports and encourages you? What can I do to serve you?”
As a telehealth provider with Avenues for Change, Miller is available for virtual counseling, assessment and support services.
